After sunset

We lie on a blanket after sunset.
The night falls softly
in gathered folds -
a gown of richest velvet.

We watch as stars
are spun out upon it -
scattered diamonds
in vast array.

Out of the dark,
outside our comprehension,
in enormity and complexity -
galaxies wheel and turn.

You turn to me now -
seal the moment with a kiss
and I am grounded,
rooted in your earth.
